Inspiring and Thought-Provoking Every once in a while a book comes along that makes you stop and think—and then think some more—like Caylin Prince’s wonderful book DECLINE PITY PARTIES AND INVITE MERCY: A Christian Journey to Break Free from Self-Pity and Embrace God’s Mercy. For someone who in interested in serious reflection on Scripture related to one’s life journey, this book is wonderful. The author is at her best when she is vulnerable. She writes in an engaging, sometimes funny, and down-to-earth style. She often shares moments from her spiritual life journey and she does so in such a way that she invites the reader to do the same. The “pity party” in the title refers, of course, to those occasions when we feel sad because we have been treated unfairly, and then try to get sympathy from others. However, instead of throwing a pity party, the author teaches ways to “invite God into the moment.” I loved and appreciated the author’s honesty and openness about her personal relationship with God. The way she showed God’s active presence and guidance in everyday moments led me to reflect on situations in my own life when God was speaking to me. I found the chapters titled “’But God’ Moments” and “Excuses are Excused” to be standouts. Overall, this book is an easy read packed with wisdom and practical Biblical insights. It is inspiring and thought-provoking and will help you to have a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ.”

There a lot of great nugget and wisdom from this book — I definitely highlighted lots of them). One of them is: “You can have a pity party or you can have God’s mercy – but you simply can’t have both”. (and the author give explanation why it is so).

The author also describes various roots of the pity party: jealousy, gossip, selfishness, lack of gratitude, laziness, insecurity, control, burnout and lack of rest, unforgiveness and then discuss how to deal with those roots.
It kind of gives deeper understanding of the problem at hand and making me realized that I also have to deal with some of those roots.

Overall, for me, this book is one of those rare book I’ve read which are comprehensive, easy to read with lots of examples, practical explanation, Biblical, and inspiring the reader to lean on God’s mercy but also having courage to take action.
